Information for Students

 

All-VA Eligibility, Procedures & Important Information for Student Participants

 

·          Qualifying students must be enrolled in their school and be a regular performing member of their school band or orchestra program in order to be eligible to audition for the All-VA groups.

·          Wind and Percussion players who qualified to audition from BOTH District Band and Regional Orchestra on different instruments MUST SELECT one or the other.  Students cannot audition on two different instruments for All-VA.

·          String Bass Players who qualified to audition for All-VA from a District Band will audition with the Orchestra Students using the orchestral audition materials.  

·          Oboe Players who also play English Horn should be prepared to audition on both instruments.  English Horn will only be used if the music in the All-VA program requires its use.

·          Any student dismissed from or moved below an eligible chair in a District Band or Regional Orchestra for reasons of attendance, conduct, or infraction of District/Regional Event rules shall NOT be eligible to audition for All-Virginia that same school year.

·          Audition Times:  All auditions will begin at 9:30 am (Winds, Percussion and Strings).  Student will be given a printed Audition Number at registration.  Students must audition in that order and must give the slip of paper that indicates their audition number to the guide upon entering the audition room.

·          Students should obtain a copy of the audition prepared etude from their director or directly from the VBODA website at http://www.vboda.org.  The etude will be available for downloading on Sunday, February 3, 2008.

·          Finally, any student who knows they will not be able to participate in the All-Virginia event is not to auditionStudents who audition and decline to participate in the All-State event may prevent another student from participating.  Any student who declines participation forfeits future eligibility to audition for the all Virginia event (see page 52, item 3, section VIII, VBODA Administrative Handbook).

 

Registration Overview

  • Directors Registration @ 8:00 AM in Wilson Hall (Band) & College Center (Strings)
  • Wind and Percussion Students from 8:00 – 10:30 AM in Warren Hall
  • String Students from 8:00 – 10:30 AM in the College Center

 

Fees & Forms:

  • Students should receive a Student Registration/Commitment Form from their director prior to the audition date. Students must complete this form prior to the day of auditions and present it at student registration (a parent signature is required).  This form is only available from your director and is NOT available on the VBODA web site.
  • Directors will pay their student’s registration fee ($10.00  per student) at Director’s Registration
  • Directors will receive a PREPAID SLIP for each student registered and for whom the registration fee has been paid.
  • Directors must see that each student receives their PREPAID SLIP before Student Registration. 

 

Student Registration:

·          Directors must give each student a PREPAID SLIP before the student will be allowed to register.

·          Students are to present their PREPAID SLIP and a completed Student Registration/Commitment Form at registration. 

·          Students will be assigned an audition number in the order in which they register.  A printed audition number will be given to the student.  This number must be turned in to the audition room monitor when the student auditions.

  • Wind & Percussion players - Music Building - some upper woodwinds will be in Taylor Hall
  • String players - College Center on the new campus
  • All auditions will begin at 9:30 am.
  • Unofficial audition results will be posted as follows:

·          Strings - College Center

 

Directors who are unable to attend the auditions must advise designated adults (as approved by the building principal) of the information above.

All-Virginia Audition Requirements: Wind and Percussion Students


1.  Major Scales (20% of Total Score) Please note the following scale requirements:

A.     All major scales are required and will be memorized

B.     Scales are called in KEY name, not CONCERT PITCH

C.     Scales are to be played in as many complete octaves as possible on the instrument

D.     Articulation is legato tongue up and down

E.      Tempo is Quarter Note @ MM 100

F.      The following rhythm will be used for all octaves: quarter note (tonic) followed by eighth notes.

                                                                         . . . .  etc.

·         Snare Drum:  This section is used for rudimental score.  Rudiments will be selected from the NARD/Ludwig 26 standard drum rudiments.  These are to be played open-close-open.

·         Timpani:  This section is to evaluate tuning skills.  The following pitch sources may be used: pitch pipe, tuning fork or mallet instrument. Students are allowed 45 seconds for tuning and study of the sight-reading.

·         Percussionists may use their own xylophone, marimba or school timpani, or use equipment provided by host site.

 

2. Chromatic Scale (20% of Total Score) Slur ascending, tongued descending (except trombones and percussion). Instruments play their chromatic scales in 16th notes at the tempo given below (quarter note = one beat, see Manual, page 98):

 

Piccolo                  D below staff to altissimo C. (2 octaves + 7th) Minimum tempo MM=120

3. Prepared Etude (30% of total score) Students perform the prepared etude for their instrument as posted on the VBODA website.

 

4. Sight-Reading  (30% of total score)  Students are given 1 sight-reading exercise.   Students are given 30 seconds to study the exercise prior to playing.

All-Virginia Percussion Audition Procedure

 

The following information is for percussionists auditioning for All-Virginia Band & Orchestra. This is in addition to (not in place of) the information for all students auditioning for All-Virginia Band & Orchestra.

 

All percussionists will audition on Snare/Multiple Percussion, Timpani, and Mallets.  You will rotate through a total of four rooms for the audition process as described below.

 

Students may not speak during the audition.  Any questions by the student must take place between the student and the guide outside of the audition room.  Students are subject to disqualification for speaking during the audition.

 

Room #1 – Snare Rudiments, Rolls & Sight-reading

  • A snare drum will be provided (you may use your own snare drum)  Sticks & mallets will not be provided
  • Set up quickly!  You will have 30 seconds to set up and be prepared to play.
  • You will be asked to play the long roll then the concert roll
    • Long Roll - rudiment #1 (from the Standard 26 Rudiments)
    • Concert Roll (closed or "buzz"), sustained sound from pp--ff--pp
  • You will be asked to play two rudiments (open to closed to open.)
  • After completing the second rudiment, you will turn the sight-reading over and have thirty seconds to study it.
  • After the thirty seconds time limit, you will be asked to play the sight-reading
  • After completing the sight-reading, quickly gather your personal items & proceed to the next room

 

Room #2 – Mallets Scales and Sight-reading

  • A standard three and one-half octave (F to C) xylophone will be provided
  • You will need to supply appropriate mallets (hard rubber, string wound, etc. – NOT hard plastic or metal)
  • You will be given a tempo (quarter = 100) from a metronome and asked to play one major scale
  • The following rhythm will be used for all octaves:
  • This process will be repeated for a second major scale
  • You will then be given the tempo (quarter = 120) and asked to play the chromatic scale.
  • After completing the chromatic scale, you will be given thirty seconds to study the sight-reading
  • After the thirty-second time limit, you will be asked to play the sight-reading
  • After playing the sight-reading selection, you will proceed to the next room

 

Room #3 – Timpani Sight-reading

  • A set of four timpani will be provided - you will need your own timpani mallets
  • The following pitch sources may be used for tuning: a pitch pipe, tuning fork or mallet instrument.
  • You will have forty-five seconds to study the sight-reading and tune the timpani to the appropriate pitches.
  • After the time limit, you will be asked to play the pitches from lowest to highest
  • After playing the pitches, you will be asked to play the sight-reading
  • After playing the sight-reading, you will proceed to the next room

 

Room #4 – Percussion Prepared Selection

  • The following items will be provided:

·         A standard three and one-half octave (F to C) xylophone

·         A set of 4 timpani, which will already be tuned to the correct pitches.

·         A snare drum & trap table (or you may use your own snare drum)

  • You must provide your own sticks, mallets and accessory percussion items.

  • You will have no more than 30 seconds to set up for your prepared performance.

    • You will not need to tune the timpani.  They will be pre-set for you.
  • After completing the prepared selection, gather your personal items and you have completed your audition.
