Directors Registration Band Directors - 8:00 am in Wilson Hall. Band directors register by District. Orchestra Directors - 8:00 am in the College Center. Orchestra directors register by Region. Directors must show your MENC membership card or pay the VMEA/VBODA non-member fee of $97.00
Registration/Audition Fees Directors are responsible for payment of the student registration/audition fee(s) at Director’s Registration The Registration/Audition fee is $10.00 per student. Directors will receive a PREPAID SLIP for each student registered Directors must see that each student receives a PREPAID SLIP prior to student registration. Checks should be made payable to VBODA. Directors must provide each student with a Student Registration/Commitment Form prior to the audition date.
Student Registration Wind & Percussion students - 8:00 am - 10:30 am at Warren Hall - "TRANSITIONS" ROOM (in the basement)Strings & Band string bass players - 8:00 am - 10:30 am in the College Center Students must have the following items with them before they will receive an audition number: PREPAID SLIP - given to you by your director prior to student registration Student Registration/Commitment Form - signed by the student, parent and director.
Percussionists will, once again, audition in all three areas (snare/multiple percussion, timpani, & mallets) and a composite score will be used to determine placement within the ensembles. Preference for instrument assignment will be considered after the ensemble placement has been determined. Percussionists will pay one audition fee of $10.00
Director Responsibilities 1. Be sure to thoroughly read Section VIII of the VBODA Administrative Handbook, especially those portions of Section VIII regarding eligibility, registration and rules of behavior. 2. Advise students of their eligibility and responsibilities. 3. Explain band/orchestra choice options to wind and percussion students. 4. Furnish each eligible student with a copy of the instructions and audition requirements. 5. Provide each student with a copy of the Student Registration/Commitment form. This form must be completed prior to registration and must be presented at the time of registration. (the form requires a parent's signature) 6. Pay the student registration fee at the director's registration and see that each student receives a prepaid slip. Band directors will register by district, string directors will register by region. 7. Directors must advise adults who are designated to represent them of the registration requirements and the procedures to be followed at the auditions.
Judges/Administrative Assistants/Band AssistantsAll Judges and Assistants: Please bring a tape recorder and audible metronome in case of an emergency
Times and Places: Band Assistants, please report to Wilson Hall at 7:30 am. Please be prepared to judge in case someone is unavailable. Orchestra Assistants, please report to the College Center at 7:30 am. Administrative Assistants are to see that only students actually auditioning and their guides are in the audition room

All adjudicators are asked to download the appropriate etude from the files at www.vboda.org (available February 3, 2008), and to familiarize themselves with the piece and look for the inevitable anomalies to be expected in newly created etudes. Any such anomalies will be addressed at the adjudicators meeting. Please bring 2 copies of the prepared selection to the audition.
Band Judges: Adjudicators for Flute/Piccolo, French Horn, and Trumpet will judge as follows: One set of judges will evaluate major scales and the sight-reading example One set of judges will evaluate the chromatic scale and the prepared etude. Adjudicators for Bb Clarinet will have responsibilities divided three ways: One set of judges will evaluate scales. Another set will evaluate the prepared selection. A third set will evaluate sight-reading. Percussion auditions will be divided into four rooms and will audition in the following order: 1 - Snare rudiments, rolls & sight-reading 2 - Mallet scales and sight-reading 3 - Timpani sight-reading 4 - Percussion preparedDIRECTORS - BE SURE YOUR STUDENTS ARE AWARE:Any student who qualifies as a member of the All-VA Bands or Orchestra and chooses not to participate in the event shall forfeit the right to audition for the ensembles the following year. The only exceptions will be a doctor verified illness or death in the family. (Section VIII, Part 3-3 or the VBODA Administrative Handbook)
