Langley Band Director Wins National Citation Of Excellence

 

Andrew Gekoskie, director of bands at Langley High School, has been presented the Citation of Excellence from the National Band Association (NBA). Langley High School is a Fairfax County public school.

The NBA Citation of Excellence, a national award, is presented to outstanding concert band directors. Gekoskie's award was presented to him for professional leadership, for inspiring and motivating excellence in musical performance, and for his service to the profession.

He was presented the award on May 21 by Stanley Schoonover, FCPS music specialist at the US Navy Band Concert hosted by the Langley HS Bands. The Langley Wind Symphony recently was the only high school band that performed at the 2004 MENC National Convention held in Minneapolis, MN this past April.

Gekoskie, who directs Langley High's symphony bands and wind symphony, has been at Langley and an employee of Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) for two years. He has over 16 years of experience as an instrumental music teacher in Pennsylvania and Virginia and three years as a Supervisor of Music in the Angleton ISD in Texas. Gekoskie is a graduate of Susquehanna University in Pennsylvania and has studied conducting at the Juilliard School of Music, the Hartt School of Music, Duquesne University, and Butler University.
