VBODA Recommendations for State Wide All-District/Regional/All-VA  Conductor Fees and Work Load

1. A guest conductor will be paid a minimum fee of
  • District Band / Regional Orchestra $1,000.00
  • All-Virginia Band / Orchestra $2,000

2. This minimum fee will be the standard for each Honor Group (i.e. MS Group, 2nd HS Band, etc).

3. Each District or Region will have the latitude to negotiate higher fees for guest conductors who contract at higher rates or who are contracted to work more than two days.

4. Each District must follow the minimum VMEA recommendations for the payment of mileage, meals, hotel or other travel arrangements necessary to contract a Guest Conductor.

5. A guest conductor will only be allowed to work up to 10 hours per day. Districts are to provide appropriate breaks and meals during the ten-hour day.

VBODA Recommendations for State Wide District Festival Judging Fees, Judging Work Load & Festival Event Logistics

1. A minimum rate of  $500.00 for District Festival judge. This rate applies to a one-day event up to ten hours. $50 per hour thereafter.

2. Districts have the latitude to negotiate higher hourly rates or event fees for those Festival Judges who contract for higher fees.

3. The festival schedule must provide a realistic timetable to allow all groups' appropriate time for set-up, performance of program and stage changes for the next group. This will help provide the judging panel an appropriate amount of time to complete their judging forms and consult each other when necessary.

5. Recommendations for Festival time slots are as follows:

Grade 1 or 2 Ensembles - 20 minutes

Grade 3 Ensembles - 25 minutes

Grade 4 Ensembles - 30 minutes

Grade 5 Ensembles - 35 minutes

Grade 6 Ensembles - 40 minutes

6. Considerations should be made regarding the size of the group, in addition to the grade level of music when establishing the festival schedule.

7. The Festival schedule must include appropriate breaks and mealtimes for the judging panel.

8. Each District must follow the minimum VMEA recommendations for the payment of mileage, meals, hotel or other travel arrangements necessary to contract a Festival judge.
