Instructions for Judges

Judges:

1.  Bring your own tape recorder, metronome and extension cord.  Make sure that these are in working condition before the audition date.  Tapes will be provided by the District!

2.  Make clear to the guides working in the rooms just what you expect them to do.

3.  Students have been instructed not to talk in the audition room.  Please do not phrase any instructions in such a way that seemingly requires an answer from the auditioning student.  There must be uniformity among all judges.  Students who talk in an audition are to be disqualified.  Your guide should communicate to you any questions the students have.

4.  Middle School only - select three scales:  one easy, one medium and one difficult.  Judge all three and ask the same three for each audition.

HIGH SCHOOL ONLY - ANY TWO at 10 points each

5.  Use the following procedure exactly in the interest of greatest fairness and uniformity.  Guides should be instructed to inform judges when the auditioning student is comfortably situated and ready to begin.  The tape recorder should be started, and one judge should READ the following:

“Number (one), please play the (Bb major) scale after we stop the metronome.”

Judges will call for the desired scale by the actual name, not concert pitch.  Judges will ask for MS only - 3 major scales - easy, medium and difficult. HS - ANY TWO. Ask the same scales for all students and judge all three (MS) (HS - TWO) of them equally.

After the major scales, the following should be read:

“Number (one), please play your chromatic scale after we stop the metronome.”

This procedure is used so that the student number and metronome tempo is taped.  After the chromatic scale, the following should be read:

“Number (one), please play the prepared selection after we stop the metronome.”

Next the following should be read:

“Number (one), you have one minute to study the sight-reading selection beginning now.”

After one minute, read the following:

“Number (one), you may now tap one measure and play the sight-reading music at your own tempo.”

6.  Students not doing the second octave (or 3rd octave in a 3 octave scale) are to be given credit for what is done.
                    Please be consistent with this.

7.  Turn in all tapes to the Site Chairman before leaving.  Do not reuse senior division tapes for junior division.

8.  Judges are to number their score sheets for each instrument starting with one.  Ascertain from the audition-room guide as each student enters, what the student’s number is.

PLEASE MAKE SURE EACH SHEET IS LABELED AS TO WHICH GROUP THE AUDITION IS FOR. LABEL EACH EITHER SENIOR OR JUNIOR.

9.  Each judge must bring a metronome.

10.  Each pair of judges should stop after the first few students to compare scores with each other and with judging standards.

11.  Each uses his/her own score sheet for each student.  All scores will be written in ink.  Initial all changes. After each student plays, the two judges total their sheets individually, staple the two sheets together and put the TOTAL in red AT THE BOTTOM OF THE SHEET.  SAVE THE TOP OF THE SHEET FOR THE TABULATOR TO PUT THE VERIFIED SCORE.

12.  At the end of the auditions, judges must put the sheets in AUDTION ORDER.  When the sheets leave your possession they will be double checked again by the tabulators.  At this time all scores are official.

TIES WILL BE BROKEN BASED ON SIGHTREADING.  IF A TIE REMAINS, THE PREPARED SCORE WILL BREAK THE TIE.

13.  All judges are to bring the following equipment:

 _____ CALCUALTOR
 _____ Cassette tape recorder
 _____ Extension cord
 _____ Metronome
 _____ Ink pens
 _____ Red pencil or pen
_____ Stapler and supply of staples

14.  All judges must be at the audition site no later than 7:30 AM.  There will be a meeting of all judges at 7:30 AM to review audition procedures.  The auditions will not begin until all judges are present and the meeting is over.

NO SCORES WILL BE AVAILABLE FOR PERUSAL AT THE AUDITION SITE.

NO DIRECTOR WILL BE ALLOWED TO SEE ANY SCORE SHEETS UNTILL ALL SCORES HAVE BEEN FINALIZED.
