Senior Major and Chromatic Scales
All scales are to be played as designated.
Do not exceed the range or tempo specified.
All scales are to be memorized.
Diatonic Scales:
1. All major scales are to be played the rhythm as for
All-Virginia auditions (see All-VA scale requirements page).
2. Scales will be called for by pitch name, not concert
pitch.
Chromatic Scale:
1. Chromatic scale ranges and tempo are the same as
All-Virginia auditions (see All-VA scale requirements page).
2. Chromatic scales should be played in sixteenth notes
(minimum MM quarter note = 120)
3. Chromatic scale should be slurred ascending, repeating
the top note, and staccato descending
Piccolo:
- All major scales two octaves
- Chromatic scale from D below the staff to Altissimo C
(third octave C)
Flute:
- All required major scales two octaves
- Chromatic scale from lowest C up three octaves
Oboe:
- Major scales: Eb, E, F, F#-Gb, G, Ab, A (one
octave)
- Major scales: Bb, B-Cb, C, C#-Db, D (two
octaves)
- Chromatic scale from lowest C to E above high C
Bassoon:
- All major scales two octaves
- Chromatic scale from lowest Bb to high Bb one octave
above the staff
Bb Soprano Clarinet:
- Major scales: E, F, F#-Gb, G (three octaves)
- Major scales: C, C#-Db, D, Eb, Ab, A, Bb, B-Cb
(two octaves)
- Chromatic scale from lowest E to highest G
Alto, Bass and Contra Bass Clarinet:
- All major scales two octaves
- Chromatic scale:
- Alto clarinet: from lowest E to E above the
high C
- Bass clarinet: from lowest E to C above the
staff
- Contra clarinet: from lowest E to G# above the
staff
Alto, Tenor and Baritone Saxophone:
- Major scales: F#-Gb, G, Ab, A (one octave)
- Major scales: Bb, B-Cb, C, C#-Db, D, Eb, E, F (two
octaves)
- Chromatic scale from lowest Bb to highest F
- alto and tenor: chromatic mm = 120
- baritone: chromatic mm = 96
Cornet/Trumpet:
- Major scales: Eb, E, F (one octave)
- Major scales: F#-Gb, G, Ab, A, Bb, B-Cb, C, C#-Db,
D (two octaves)
- Chromatic scale from lowest G to highest C (two octaves
plus a 4th)
French Horn:
- All major scales two octaves (DO NOT START BELOW Db
BELOW MIDDLE C)
- Chromatic scale from lowest G up two octaves
Tenor Trombone:
- Major scales: Db, D, Eb (one octave)
- Major scales: C, E, F, F#-Gb, G, Ab, A, Bb, B-Cb
(two octaves)
- Chromatic scale from lowest F to 2nd Bb above the staff
(two octaves plus a 4th); legato tongue up and
- staccato tongue down (mm = 96)
Bass Trombone:
- Major scales two octaves (starting from lowest octave
possible)
- Chromatic scale from F below the staff to F above the
staff (two octaves); legato tongue up and staccato tongue
down (mm = 96)
Baritone Horn TC:
- Major scales: Eb, E, F (one octave)
- Major scales: C, C#-Db, D, F#-Gb, G, Ab, A, Bb,
B-Cb (two octaves)
- Chromatic scale same as Trumpet/Cornet
Baritone Horn BC:
- Major scales same as Tenor Trombone
- Chromatic scale same as Tenor Trombone except
mm=120
Tuba:
- Major scales: B-Cb, C, C#-Db, D, Eb, E (one
octave)
- Major scales: F, F#-Gb, G, Ab, A, Bb (two
octaves)
- Chromatic scale from lowest F to highest Bb (two octaves

String Bass:
